The reason of the fight scene in Season 1 is completely opposite to Season 3’s.
He went from putting up a nasty attitude mask 24/7 and acting as an apathetic and arrogant prick to eventually assuming his true self, swallowing his pride and being selfless, while expecting nothing in return.
His actions no longer come from hiding himself, but being true to himself.
That’s how War and Love changed a man, or rather, helped him find out who he was.
